Originating in Germany, Baumkuchen has gained a faithful following in Japan over a period of more than 50 years. It's name "King of Cakes" comes from the fact that it was previously enjoyed only by royal patrons like the Prussian King and the Emperor of Japan. This labor-centric speciality with more than 200 years of history is a true test of a pastry chef's skills. To achieve the tree rings effect, thin layers of batter are brushed evenly onto a spit and allowed to bake until golden. This process is repeated for each layer numerous times and the result is a truly delicious cake unlike any other. No wonder they call it "The King Of Cakes"!
